Hikking route :
With the first light of the day starting from Fragokastello and head towards the village of Plakias , we will need 30 to 40 minutes . Leave the car and from there by bus heading towards the village Koxare , where we will meet one of the most impressive natural sights of Crete , Kourtaliotiko canyon flowing between mountains Kouroupa (984m) and Dry Mountain (904m) .
The rocky slopes of the gorge reach 600 meters and hide rich biodiversity. From inside passes Kourtaliotis River crossing of the gorge and flows into Lake Prevelis since joined the canyon Frati. The last piece of the river called Big River. Following the steps on the sides of the road Koxare – Asomatos arrive at the bottom of the gorge, in the church of St.Nicholas. We are moving on the narrow built path and reach the bed of the canyon toward the south and the exit of the Libyan Sea. With the water in our companion since the beginning of the path to the exit of it, in many places you must swim in ponds formed under the waterfalls. The route is relatively difficult but you will be rewarded the most.
After about four hours we are in the stone arch bridge, built over the Grand River. After the bridge and on the right bank of the river starts a dirt road which we follow. After about 2km we reach a point of cypress. Right up seeing the church of Agia Paraskevi of the 14th century with it’s beautiful and well- preserved murals. Just behind the church, begins the marked and steep path that will lead us to the Parking over the lake Preveli.
Last piece of the journey 20 minutes downhill path leading to the beach of Preveli. There you can enjoy the crystal clear waters of the Libyan Sea and rest in the shade of palm trees on the river while waiting for the boat to Plakias.
Alternative route :
Starting Fragokastello, head towards the village Koxare, it will take about 60 minutes. From there you can drive across a part of the Kourtaliotiko canyon and reach the arched stone bridge, built over the Grand River. After you turn left towards the beach of Drimiskianou. From there follow down the dirt road and you will arrive at Amoudi after 6km. At the end of the road, you will see a few taverns and a large free parking area.
Before you start (by feet) for the short path (5 minutes) leading to the palm forest of Preveli, you can do a tour of the village, to see the sites were old olive oil mills, mills, as well raki boilers were and took some pictures at the old plane tree in the center of the square.
